One year after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, how have these events and the political changes that have resulted from them affected the educational field? Taking this question as the starting point, we want to propose a series of "urgent" measures that we have been developing at the level of education and democratic citizenship. We consider that both the attacks of September 11th and the policies implemented in its wake had significant repercussions at the educational level and that therefore this must be a central site for the discussion of such events. It is necessary to generate educational responses and reactions from the perspective of democratic citizenship which go beyond the condemnation of the attacks. Even though this is a fundamental measure, we consider that it is insufficient because it leaves the institution in a situation of precariousness in the process of understanding both the causes and the possible consequences of the attacks. Among the measures that we have been proposing and that will be analysed in this conference, we would like to highlight the following: a) Emphasise the value of human Life and of a culture of non-violence; b) Promote the commitment to the search for truth; c) Raise awareness to the value of justice and refusal of revenge and hate; d) Fight fear and distrust; e) Insist on the value of democracy, peace and the need to globalise human rights; f) Emphasise the value of commitment and hope, in the face of indifference and discouragement.
