This article presents a critical view of dualistic models developed within social and cognitive psychology arguing that the majority of these models neglect the issue of process activation/deactivation regulation. A discussion of the need of a mechanism of process regulation is developed considering the hypothesis of this regulation being a question of natural selection on the basis of the motivation and capacity characteristics of the system. Arguing for a need of postulating a regulation mechanism the authors suggesting the feeling of familiarity as a regulation mechanism (FARM).
