Abstract

This article consists on a needs, preferences, and levels of satisfaction assessment of a sample of homeless persons with several services in the community. In a prospective form the influence of several factors in the use of those services has also been studied. The data collection took place in a Lisbon shelter by screening 16 homeless men. Data were collected during a participant observation, through a questionnaire and by the consultation of internal documents. The services who's need was more frequently pointed out by the participants, concerning the previous year, was help getting food, clothing, and shelter, assessment of their needs for services, medical care (for physical health problems), information and protection of own rights, employment, and dental care. Most participants did not recognize service's ability to help them. They consider professional's commitment as being insufficient. The results gathered, point out to the need of developing support systems that are adaptable to the needs, specificity's and «timings» of the homeless population.
