It is generally accepted that the family is going through important structural and conceptual changes. But how do the young people perceive the family? This seems to be an important question that should be answered. As such, one is going to present the family values sustained by the students from the University of Algarve. A questionnaire with 46 questions concerning the dominating values in western society was used (Figueiredo, 1988). The results show that these students experience the family as a very important issue in their lives and that they support the new family values. The family is seen as a tool to promote self-fulfillment. Besides, marriage and procriation are dissociated from each other and sex life does not begin with marriage. Finally, both husband and wife, have identical rights and duties.
