The aim of this paper is to analyse the educational decentralisation policies followed in the late years by the Portuguese central administration and the role of local authorities in the fullfilling of their attributions. Being the begining of a broader research project, we identify the diversity of the local authorities approach concerning the way they assume legal competencies in the educational field and we detect a trend to implement pedagogical strategies related to the different political and social situations that characterise local policies.
