The author presents some theoretical and methodological concepts developed under the inspiration of L. S. Vygotsky. After showing some of the limitations of Piaget´s model of cognitive development in children, the article presents some proposals that underline the role of the social factors and their implications in the acquisition and aplication of knowledge, particularly in the case of school-age children. The notions of «signification» and «comunication contract» are presented in this context. Finally, some of the research inspired on the «absurd problem» paradigm is presented, providing information that contributes to the study of the impact of the social context in cognitive development.
