Abortion is an illegal procedure in Portugal except in some extreme situations, until the 10th week of pregnancy. The aim of this study is to identify the attitude of Portuguese health professionals towards abortion. An opportunistic sample with 66 medical doctors, nurses, and psychologists, social workers and educators, gave answers to an attitude questionnaire with 27 items about abortion. The analysis of results shows conflicting attitudes between the sexes, the various professions, religions, and age groups. It also shows conflicting attitudes, with extreme groups stating that they are in favour of abortion and at the same time, the same respondents, saying that abortion is a very stressfull procedure.
