Nowadays, maternity is but one of many options open to women in search of personal fulfilment. It wasn't allways so. In the article the author presents a brief review of the historical and anthropological evolution of the maternity concept. The possible psychological consequences of the different ways for women to live maternity nowadays are also approached.
