A study on feeding disorders is hereby presented by the authors. The disorders described are frequent features in infant mental health clinic. Factors, relating to both mother and child, which encourage feeding development are also described. The specific infant feeding disorder studied in this paper is known as «early anorexia» and in the author´s experience a disturbed mother-child relationship is always present, either as primary or secondary factor. Two clinical syndromes with different psychopathological basis (conflict and insuficiency) are described. The «failure-to-thrive («FTT») syndrome is also portrayed as a consequence of serious inadequacies in infant care. A clinical evaluation model based on 7 parameters used in Unidade da Primeira Infância is presented. Finally, the authors concluded that the study and the evaluation of these disorders require multidisciplinary and structured team work.
