Abstract

The author presents the hipothesis tested in his fieldwork among the Mapuche, in the south of the Central Valley of Chile: local groups sisthematize their daily life in theories and practices, rather abstracts, idealistics and complexes; it orientates their process of preventing sickness and of curing diseases; in order to understand this process it is necessary to know their natural, social and historical conditions that surrounds their ancestors´ ideas and practices; there is a poor comunication between physicians and the Mapuche; physicians ignore the theoretical construction of the Mapuche as well the Mapuche do not understand physicians´western theory.
