Abstract

TINOCO, Isabel; PESTANA, Miguel  and  NOBREGA, Filomena. The Cork Quality Management Procedures Versus Standing in the Oak Forests. Silva Lus. [online]. 2009, vol.17, n.2, pp.131-158. ISSN 0870-6352.

In this work we pretend to give a contribution for the optimization of cork quality versus management methodologies of Mediterranean evergreen oak woodlands of southern Portugal (montados). Four production systems were identified from Setúbal with the same soil and climate characteristics: ●Montado managed with sowing about forty years old; ●Montado from natural regeneration with a periodic cleanness of the brushes; ●Mix stand (Cork oak + stone pine + maritime pine) from natural regeneration; ●Montado with intensive pasture. Bark samples (planks) were extracted from cork oak trees in each montado. Planks able to stopper extraction, with thickness higher than stopper diameter, were separated from the ones not thick enough. The evaluation of the physical and mechanic cork characteristics was based on these parameters: porosity, humidity, specific gravity, rupture strength and its angle. The parameter which separates the good from bad corks is the minimal area of the pores. So the good corks are those that have lower pores number and a minimal area of pores. Including calibre within other parameters and with management methodologies, it is possible to conclude: 1. The organized management modality has the best (higher) cork calibre to obtain more stoppers. On the other hand, the montado with intensive pasture is the management modality that presents cork samples with lower calibre; 2. The organized management modality is the one that produces better stoppers, in opposition to the mix stand from natural regeneration; 3. The good corks with lower calibres appear on organized management modality and bad corks come from the montado with intensive pasture So, the managed montado produces cork with better quality for the bigger and the lower calibres. This type of cork oak stand has the best trees to obtain the stoppers and disks with better quality.
