This paper focuses on the macroeconomic context of the wood construction and furniture sectors, showing their importance in the Portuguese national economy, the characteristics of the corresponding enterprises and workforce, as well as the main domestic and international market trends for the different phases of the productive cycle. This analysis is part of a more comprehensive study for the development of an economic flow model for the forest and wood chains, where the analysis is performed separately for the chains of the different end products (construction and furniture, wrapping and packaging, paper and paperboard). This study is complementary to the reflection made in the National Strategy for Forests, about forests and their productions, integrating the subsequent phases of industrial transformation up to the end products.
