Growth and form characteristics were analysed in a provenance trial at age 8, in Mata Nacional do Escaroupim. Principal component analysis was used to obtain a graphic representation of the performance of provenances congregating characteristics. A primary selection index was developed aiming at multicharacteristic selection. Relationships between provenances, provenance regions and altitude were also analysed. Highland provenances show better form but reduced growth, whereas material originating from seed orchards and Monção reveal the best general performance. Simulations with different numbers of observations were made, in order to adjust the number of observations that should be made in future evaluations.
