SANTOS, António; ANJOS, Ofélia  e  SIMOES, Rogério. Evaluation of Paper Quality Produced from Fibre of Acacia spp.. Silva Lus. [online]. 2005, vol.13, n.2, pp.249-266. ISSN 0870-6352.

This study evaluates the paper making potential of Acacia melanoxylon and Acacia dealbata wood, based on a comparison with Eucalyptus globulus. The Pulps were transformed by the sulphate process. In general, all three species exhibited similar performances in the cooking and bleaching processes. However, compared to the Eucalyptus globulus chip sample used, Acacia melanoxylon had a slightly higher pulp yield. This is in accordance with the lignin and extractives contents of the wood samples. To test paper making potential, the bleached pulps were submitted to the refining process in a PFI mill, in order to obtain pulp suspensions with increasing drainage resistance. The fibre characteristics were evaluated and handsheets produced. At a given refining level, paper produced from acacia is smoother and has higher tensile and burst strength indexes. On the other hand, Eucalyptus globulus fibres show higher zero-span tensile strength. This means paper can be produced with a higher mechanical resistance, although at the expense of increased energy demand in refining. At a given mechanical strength, optical properties of the paper produced from the three species are similar.
