ABRANTES, L. M.  e  VIANA, A. S.. Surface modification with ultra-thin organic films: New routes for metal protection. Corros. Prot. Mater. [online]. 2009, vol.28, n.1, pp.6-13. ISSN 0870-1164.

The use of electronic conducting polymers in the development of a new class of coatings for the protection of metallic corrosion has been extensively investigated. In this work, the requirements and methodologies to obtain successful polymeric films onto different reactive metals are analysed. The performance of the modified surfaces in corrosive medium is also illustrated, including results from our own research. A brief summary of the employment of self-assembled monolayers for corrosion protection purposes and as adhesion promoters of electronic conducting polymer films is presented. The construction of composite coatings, where the molecules forming the ultra-thin layer bear as terminal reactive group the same monomer as the deposited polymer is discussed, and the properties of these systems involving pyrrole are also reported.

Palavras-chave : Electronic Conducting Polymers; Self-assembled Monolayers; Functionalisation; Anodic Oxidation; Polypyrrole; Copper Protection.
