PIZARRO, Isabel  y  TEIXEIRA, José. Conceptual Metaphor and literariness: the concept of “Hour” in Fernando Pessoa. Diacrítica [online]. 2016, vol.30, n.1, pp.139-161. ISSN 0807-8967.

ABSTRACT The analysis hereby presented is inserted in the dominium of Cognitive Linguistics and aims at applying the instruments of poetic metaphor analysis, as proposed by Lakoff and Turner (1989) within the ambit of The Conceptual Metaphor Theory, postulated by Lakoff and Johnson (1980 and 1989) and by Lakoff and Feldman (2006), to the metaphor of “hour”, in the orthonymous poems of Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), written between 1910 and 1935. In order to achieve such purpose, we started from a corpus constituted by six excerpts of poems in which the lexical item “hour” designates metonymically the superordinate category TIME, trough the conceptual metonymy HOUR FOR TIME. The metaphors of “hour” are complex, which means that they are the result of the hierarchical combination of conventional metaphors of a specific and general level which constitute the social background that restrains the poet's creativity and out of which the process of creating the metaphor of “hour” emerges, based on the four conceptual mechanisms in which the construction of the poetic metaphor lies: extension, elaboration, questioning and combination.

Palabras clave : poetic metaphor; conceptual metaphor; metaphorical expression; image scheme; Fernando Pessoa.
