Abstract

SILVA, António Carvalho da. The configuration of Grammar teaching in Portuguese language textbooks of the 9th grade. Diacrítica [online]. 2016, vol.30, n.1, pp.83-112. ISSN 0807-8967.

In 2012, Portuguese language syllabi adopted the term "grammar" in order to refer to language awareness. This change of terminology for a central area of Portuguese language teaching suggests a reinforcement of formal linguistic knowledge. Thus, learning grammar will mean not only a better knowledge of a given natural language, but also making use of that knowledge for the improvement of the communicative skills of speakers. As a consequence of the official guidelines, since 2013 new Portuguese language textbooks have been adopted for Primary Education which may already have introduced some modifications. It is from this assumption that the aim of this paper develops, first in a theoretical way, to establish how the nature of grammar is redefined at school and, then, by means of an empirical analysis, to check if 9th grade textbooks conceive new activities for grammar learning, by the implementation of innovative teaching methodologies.

Keywords : Portuguese language teaching; linguistic education; language awareness; grammar; textbooks.
