Abstract

CAETANO, Ana  and  BARROSO, Henrique. Deviations in graphematic representation by learners of Portuguese L2 in East Timor: the case of fricatives. Diacrítica [online]. 2016, vol.30, n.1, pp.5-30. ISSN 0807-8967.

The analysis of a corpus of written texts produced by a sample of selected informants - a group of Secondary Technical and Vocational School Teachers of East Timor - allowed us to realize that the graphematic representation of fricatives appears to be the most sensitive area in the consonant system of European Portuguese, in this context of multilingualism and language contact, where it is both the official language and L2 for most Timorese. Accordingly, this article aims not only to survey the deviations in the representation of the grapheme/phoneme relation but also to determine their causes.

Keywords : Portuguese Second Language; linguistic competence; standard orthography; deviations in graphematic representation; fricatives.
