SPINUZZA, Giulia. “The entire land is becoming blood-soaked”: poetry and war in mozambique. Diacrítica [online]. 2015, vol.29, n.3, pp.204-226. ISSN 0807-8967.

The aim of this essay is to study the theme of war in the poetic production of Gloria de Sant'Anna, an author of Portuguese origin who lived during the colonial era in Mozambique. The texts that provide an example of poetic memory of Colonial War (Ribeiro & Vecchi, 2011a) offer a feminine perspective on the conflict and show a poetic subject sharing the tragedy of the Portuguese and the local population. We will demonstrate that these poems, written during the final period of colonial era between 1961 and 1972, refer to a multifaceted view of the conflict. In the final part of the article we will compare one of the texts by Glória de Sant'Anna with a poem by Eduardo White to demonstrate that, despite relating to different conflicts, the two poets use the same language of indignation and sorrow at the horror of war.
