This work focuses on three key works of Father Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves for the teaching and learning of Chinese in Macau early nineteenth century: the Arte China, the Diccionario Portuguez-China and the Diccionario China-Portuguez. Between two languages carrying cultures, worldviews, religions and philosophies as diverse as Portuguese and Chinese, the concern of introducing intercultural explanations is very present in the teaching triptych written by this Portuguese Father of the Royal College of St. Joseph in Macau. These cross-cultural references are not only the direct type, condemning the language and culture teaching and learning to the ankylosed dichotomous vision that has reigned in language pedagogy, with weak pedagogical results; intercultural references work at various levels, diffuse, transported by the examples, the contexts, the heckling, the notes, the various ways that a great teacher can lay hand and an expert grammarian and lexicographer had no difficulty in following or in which he knows how to lead their students.
