This paper aims to describe the role of the discourse markers ‘quer dizer’, ‘ou seja’ and ‘isto é’ in European contemporary Portuguese. It is a corpus-based research: the data were collected from the oral and the written sub-corpora of the “Corpus de Referência do Português Contemporâneo” (Reference Corpus of contemporary Portuguese). The research attempts to answer the following questions: (i) are the three discourse markers interchangeable in all contexts? (ii) besides their reformulative function, are there other values that can be signaled by the three markers?
