Abstract

TEIXEIRA, José. Diegesis, language(s) and cinema: The Artist, by Michel Hazanavicius. Diacrítica [online]. 2013, vol.27, n.3, pp.285-300. ISSN 0807-8967.

This paper will analyze how in the film The Artist, by Michel Hazanavicius, the sound is used in order to serve its semiotic structure as an apparently silent movie. We will try to show the composition of the diegetic structure and, throughout the film, its relation to the soundtrack semiotic values. It is also our aim to demonstrate how the film is a symbolic reference to the relationship between pictorial and verbal languages that is usually the basis of movie. We will analyze as well how throughout the film some symbolic elements are structured allowing an overall and coherent reading of the film as a vision of the relationship between words and images in the communicational process.

Keywords : The Artist; cinema and language; cinema and semiotics.
