SILVA, Marie-Manuelle da. Reading the graphic novel Île Bourbon 1730 by Appollo & Trondheim through an Indian ocean studies paradigm. Diacrítica [online]. 2013, vol.27, n.3, pp.59-76. ISSN 0807-8967.

This article presents a case study that is part of a wider project on narrative and situated memory (Nora, 1984), within the frame of research on colonial history and postcolonial ruptures (Blanchard et al., 2005). I analyse the graphic novel Île Bourbon 1730 as a revealing example to understand contemporary historical and political configurations inside the francophone space, conceived as a geo-political, geo-cultural and geo-aesthetic space, defined as heterogeneous and fragmented. The aim of this analysis is to display the productivity of an approach determined by Indian Ocean Studies to Île Bourbon 1730, illustrating the dynamics of “contact zones” (Pratt, 1991) and their processes of negotiation. Secondly, this analysis will expose the relation between contact zones and their French “centre”, which is simultaneously “provincialized”, confronted and challenged by postcoloniality.
