Abstract

LOPES, Maria José Ferreira. From Pandora to Eva: ancient sources of Western Misogyny. Diacrítica [online]. 2012, vol.26, n.2, pp.490-511. ISSN 0807-8967.

This paper analyses the Hellenic sources of Misogyny, introducing the main contributions to an ideological and literary repertoire to which Roman culture would add with a closer impact. Then, we examine the way, within the budding Christianity, Jewish heritage, present in the Bible, relates with the classical misogynistic rhetoric, and Pandora’s myth is systematically mixed with that of Eve. We will observe how written word and its exegesis contributed decisively towards the continuity of ideas and formulae, always present, but deeply founded on cultural heritage.

Keywords : Misogyny; Hesiod; Classical Athens; Bible; Pandora and Eve; Exegesis; Cultural Heritage.
