Abstract

This article aims at informing and reflecting on other contributions of the brothers Grimm - besides their probably best known work in Portugal, the Kinder-und Hausmärchen - to philology, linguistics and German literature, focusing on the role of Jacob Grimm for the birth of German linguistic. The article starts with an overview of the method of Grimm’s historical-empirical linguistics, contrasting it with and demarcating it from other linguistic approaches of his time, and proceeds to an analysis of the sociopolitical impact of these linguistic studies, particularly considering the link between linguistics and national ideology.
