Drawing on the identification of civilizing and rationalization processes, as well as on the relation between mimesis and rationality on the theory of melody, harmony, speech and writing, as well as the their relation and evolution established in Essai sur l’origine des langues, an argument is built showing current relevance of Rousseau’s conceptual tools on music sociology, as well as on the critical and empirical knowledge on music communication.
