Abstract

GOMES, Maria Cristina Sousa; FREITAS, Adelaide  and  PINTO, Maria Luís Rocha. Families and internal mobility: an analysis based on data from the 2011 census. Anál. Social [online]. 2019, n.230, pp.82-105. ISSN 0003-2573.  https://doi.org/10.31447/AS00032573.2019230.04.

Family mobility is not usually considered in the context of internal migrations. However, the data show that there are characteristics of municipalities that determine how families move and distribute themselves. The analysis of the associations between population, family characteristics, and changes in migratory flows of 308 municipalities, based on the 2011 census information, reflects on family mobility in Portugal, highlighting the differentiating aspects. The associations found, under two territorial scales, allow emphasizing different territorial dynamics with respect to the phenomena of attraction and repulsion, associated with the displacement or permanence of the population in the territories.

Keywords : families and mobility; internal family migration; internal mobility.
