Abstract

SILVA, Mário Augusto Medeiros da. Another bridge over the South Atlantic: African decolonization, political and intellectual alliances in São Paulo in the 1960s. Anál. Social [online]. 2017, n.225, pp.804-826. ISSN 0003-2573.

Another bridge over the South Atlantic: African decolonization, political and intellectual alliances in São Paulo in the 1960s. This article analyzes the social conditions of the relationship between intellectuals and Brazilian black and white activists in São Paulo and African militants, mostly Angolans, in the context of the anticolonial struggle of the late 1950s and mid-1960s. Using a variety of sources, the aim is to highlight the debate generated by these intellectuals and their subsequent separation, caused by the difficulties faced by both sides, both institutionally and daily, following the popular-military coup of 1964 in Brazil.

Keywords : Anticolonial fight; political activism and culture; Africa-Brazil relations; intellectuals.
