This paper proposes a comparative analysis of the struggles for recognition through the hip-hop and graffiti cultures in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It focuses on the tensions created by the search for social inclusion, the criticism toward segregationist social relationships and the appeal of market-driven visibility. It also analyzes how subcultures construct an order of recognition and how they are appropriated and interpreted in the public sphere.
