SILVA, Susana. To classify and to silence: surveillance and institutional control of female prostitution in Portugal . Anál. Social [online]. 2007, n.184, pp.789-810. ISSN 0003-2573.

The supposedly neutral and exclusive discourses of the Portuguese courts, police forces and social security system on female prostitution reveal similar political and ideological substrata, based on patriarchal authority and models of «family» and «femininity» governed and sanctioned by the dominant social groups and institutions.

Keywords : law; female prostitution; social control.
