Dez anos da Medievalista online: Um testemunho

A propósito da investigação sobre cerâmica islâmica em Portugal

As primeiras referências sobre cerâmica islâmica em Portugal remontam ao final do século XIX. A investigação evolui timidamente até aos anos 80 do século XX, quando se assiste ao incremento dos estudos sobre a temática, impulsionado pelos projectos estruturantes de Mértola e Silves. Nos anos 90, este incremento intensifica-se e, na última década, a par de um maior número, alargam-se a diversidade e a dispersão geográfica de trabalhos e projectos, nomeadamente com origem em arqueologia urbana. O projecto CIGA (Cerâmica Islâmica do Ġarb al-Andalus), iniciado em 2008, insere-se nesta dinâmica, promovendo a sistematização, problematização e divulgação de toda a informação dispersa e apresentando aqui uma síntese histórica dos estudos sobre cerâmica islâmica recolhida no território português, as suas principais tendências, os seus problemas, virtudes e as perspectivas futuras.

The first references on Islamic pottery in Portugal go back to the end of the nineteenth century. The modest evolution of the research until the 1980s was replaced by the development of the studies on this subject, pressed forward by the fundamental projects of Mértola and Silves. In the 1990s, this development was intensified and, in the last decade, the number, diversity and geographical dispersion of studies and projects was remarkable, particularly those originated from urban archaeology. The CIGA project (Cerâmica Islâmica do Ġarb al-Andalus), started in 2008, is part of this dynamics, promoting the systematization, the discussion and the diffusion of all the information and presenting here a composite paper about the studies on Islamic ceramics in Portugal, its main tendencies, problems, virtues and future perspectives.

Palabra de hidalgo, espejo de rey: Acerca de un episodio de la Crónica de D. Fernando de Fernão Lopes

A partir de dos alusiones que aparecen en la Crónica de D. Fernando,de Fernão Lopes, se trata de explicar la presencia de un hidalgo vizcaíno, Juan Alonso de Múgica, en Portugal durante el reinado de Fernando I. Más allá del trabajo puramente prosopográfico, este estudio aprovecha el contenido de la crónica para ahondar en el tratamiento de conceptos como el consejo y la liberalidad regia en contextos políticos de intensa construcción propagandística como son las cortes portuguesa y castellana de finales del siglo XIV y principios del XV. Se aborda, en suma, el arquetipo de rey en Portugal y Castilla en la historiografía de ambos reinos, encontrando significativos paralelos y transferencias, además de la emergencia de discursos estamentales de las élites urbanas y del estamento nobiliario.

From two allusions in Fernão Lopes’ Crónica de D. Fernando, it is attempted to explain the presence in Portugal of a Biscayan nobleman, Juan Alonso de Múgica, during the reign of Ferdinand I. Beyond the purely prosopographic work, this study uses the contents of the chronicle to delve into the treatment of concepts like counsel and royal liberality in political contexts of intense propagandistic construction as were the Portuguese and Spanish courts of the late 14th and early 15th centuries. It addresses, in short, the archetype of the king in Portugal and Castile in the historiography of both kingdoms, finding significant parallels and transfers, as well as the emergence of class discourses in the urban elites and the nobility.

Luxúria e iconografia na escultura românica portuguesa

A luxúria na iconografia românica portuguesa - enquanto sinónimo de erotismo -, tem sido pouco abordada no panorama científico nacional. O presente artigo procura contribuir para este debate, analisando diversas áreas simbólicas e temáticas que podemos encontrar no bestiário medieval, na Bíblia, ou nas representações do ser humano e do mundo animal. A investigação levou-nos à conclusão de que a luxúria se encontra presente de norte a sul do país, apesar de ter maior incidência no norte, estando especialmente centrada na temática das sereias e onde se destaca o Mosteiro de Travanca por funcionar como polo irradiador, apresentando uma representação sexual algo contida.

The luxury on the Portuguese Romanesque iconography - as a synonym of eroticism -, has been little studied. The present article contributes to this debate by analyzing different symbolic and thematic areas that can be found on the Medieval Bestiary, on the Bible, on the human being and on the animal world representations. The investigation led us to the conclusion that the luxury can be found from the north to the south of the country, though more incident on the north, and especially focused on the mermaid theme. In this respect, the Travanca Monastery works as an irradiating center presenting sexual representations somehow repressed.

Roger Machado, um português ao serviço dos primeiros soberanos Tudor

O artigo analisa a vida e actividade diplomática de Roger Machado, diplomata português que serviu os reis ingleses entre o final do século XV e o início do seguinte. O maior destaque é dado aos diários escritos pelo próprio como testemunho das embaixadas levadas junto aos Reis Católicos e a João II de Portugal. Os documentos são contextualizados no quadro das relações diplomáticas existentes entre os três países.

The article analyses the life and diplomatic activity of Roger Machado, the Portuguese diplomat who served the English kings between the late XVth and the early XVIth centuries. The main focus is placed upon the diaries written by himself as testimony of the embassy of 1490 to the Catholic Kings of Spain and João II of Portugal. The documents are framed within the diplomatic relations of these countries and can be of use to shed light over the daily life of late medieval diplomacy.
