INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Form and preparation of manuscripts

Guidelines for submission

1. Manuscripts, short communications, reviews and letters for publication that have not been published elsewhere and all correspondence regarding papers prior to their acceptance should be sent to the Journal Editor: Prof. Victor M.M. Lobo, Department of Chemistry, University of Coimbra, 3004-535 Coimbra, Portugal, tel. + 351 239 828403, fax + 351 239 827703, e-mail vlobo@ci.uc.pt

2. The Editor welcomes manuscripts based on original research in any field of electrochemistry. It is the preference of the Editor that papers be published in the English language. The author is responsible for the technical aspect of the manuscript, which could be obscured by faulty English.

3. Authors must supply an electronic version (diskette or e-mail attachment). Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts by e-mail in a single file in WORD or PDF formats.

4. Authors should supply up to five (5) keywords or phrases which best characterize the manuscript in order to facilitate online searching.

5. A short abstract (maximum length 200 words) of the main contributions in the paper is required. This synopsis should be carefully prepared, once it is automatically the source of most abstracts.

6. Authors are cautioned to type all mathematical and chemical symbols, equations, and formulae.

The nomenclature sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is requested for chemical compounds. Chemical bonds should be correctly placed, and double bonds clearly indicated. Valence is to be indicated by superscript plus or minus signs. The use of SI units is preferred.

7. References should be numbered consecutively in the order of their appearance in the text, using the appropriate number(s) in square brackets, and should be complete, including authors' initials and, for unpublished lectures or symposia, the title of the paper, the date, and the name of the sponsoring society. Please compile references on a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript. Abbreviations of journal titles should conform to the practices of Chemical Abstracts. Footnotes should also be numbered and included as references.

Examples:

  1. D. Pletcher, Industrial Electrochemistry, Chapman and Hall, London, 1982.
  2. S. Trasatti, W.E. O'Grady, in Adavances in Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering, H. Gericher, P. Delahay, Eds., Vol. 13, Interscience, New York, 1980. p. 177.
  3. H.A.O. Hill, Port. Electrochim. Acta 19 (2001) 165-171.

8. Figures and Tables should always be mentioned in the text and should be numbered with Arabic numerals. Figure and table titles should be sufficiently detailed that the main message of each figure is apparent without reference to the text.

9. All figures must be submitted in a suitable form for reproduction (camera ready). Good glossy photographs are required for halftone reproductions. The maximum final size of figures for this journal is 16.51 x 21.59 cm (6.5 x 8.5 in.) (after reduction). If in doubt about the preparation of illustrations suitable for reproduction, please consult the publisher at the address given above in paragraph 1 and ask for a sample drawing. Poor quality artwork will lead to delay in publication.

Colour illustrations. All colour figures will be reproduced in full colour in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing colour figures in print. Authors are encouraged to submit colour illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colours should be used. Dark colours against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your colour images against a white background wherever possible.

10. Please supply legends for all figures and compile these on a separate sheet.

11. Electronic Proofing In order to expedite the publication and on-line posting of articles in Scientific Electronic Library On-Line (SciELO), the Portugaliae Electrochimica Acta now offers electronic proofing. Corresponding authors with e-mail addresses will be sent page proofs in pdf format via e-mail. Please follow the instructions in the e-mail; contact names and numbers are given for questions, problems, or if an author wishes to receive a paper proof. Should e-mail contacts be impossible, fax contacts may eventually be used (+ 351 239 827703).

12. Refereeing Acceptance of manuscript of any kind must be preceded by positive evaluation by the referees. Referees are anonymous unless they choose to reveal their identity by signing their documents.

13. Revised Manuscripts When a revision is requested, authors must return the revised manuscript within two (2) months. If returned later, a revised manuscript will be treated as a new submission.

Twenty (20) reprints are supplied free of charge. Neither the editors nor the PES keep any supply of reprints; requests for copies of papers should be addressed to the author of the paper concerned.

Guidelines for disk submission

Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy.
The hard copy must match the disk.

The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).

Text
Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in Windows, or Macintosh format.

Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Editor will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.

File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.

Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Illustrations
All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.

Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full coulor files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.

Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or JPEG (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.

Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.

File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., *.tif).

Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
