Scope and policy

Finisterra- Revista Potuguesa de Geografia, edited since 1966 by the Center for Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon (CEG, Universidade de Lisboa), is the oldest and one of the leading Portuguese journals of Geography.

The composition of the Executive Committee follows the criteria of gender parity and integrates academics from different scientific areas of Geography. The focus on young researchers, in the composition of the Executive Committee, aims to encourage the publication of more recent research, but is essentially due to their experience publishing and reviewing scientific articles and with digital editing , which, without diminishing the importance of the paper edition, is key for improving the position of FINISTERRA in the online publishing world.

Finisterra publishes original texts dedicated to research in many aspects of Human and Physical Geography, Environmental Hazards, Local and Regional Planning, Local and Regional Development, Geographical Information Sciences, among other topics.

The quality of FINISTERRA is assured though the revision of submitted articles by an editor designated by the Director and the Executive Committee and double-blind peer review.

Since 2016, Finisterra is published 3 times a year.

 Guidelines Thematic Issue

Opening of a period for applications:

The process of creating a thematic issue (TI) starts with the launch of an open period for applications, circulated by Finisterra.

The submission of the I is made by the Editor Responsible (ER)

The Director and the Executive Committee, together with two experts, evaluate the applications received based on the following selection criteria:

·         Relevance of the theme;

·         Scientific quality of each proposed manuscript;

·         Consistency of the set of proposed manuscripts ant the contribution of the theme to the advancement of science;

·        Research by the authors in the thematic area of the number (academic degree and affiliation); In order to ensure that SIs are sufficiently "open" to the participation of specialists from different areas and / or backgrounds, it is recommended that uthors with the same affiliation do not exceed 1/3 of the global number of authors. Failure to comply with this condition is a possible exclusion factor from the application.

Final decision – the decision to accept thematic issues is made by the Executive Commission of Finisterra and by the Editorial Commission of CEG.

After the final decision is made, the Responsible Editor of the TI approved, must sign with the Executive Commission of Finisterra a formal agreement of programmed publication.
