INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope & policy

Research by artists

Revista :Estúdio publishes original articles within the area of artistic studies with the aim of exploring and discussing the innovation and investigation in this area study. The objective is to present research, within the field of art, done by the artists. The authors will study the work of another professional, their colleague.

Revista :Estúdio follows the principles of scientific quality, diversity and cultural relevance. The journal promotes the publication of articles which:
  • Explore the artist’s point of view on art
  • Introduce quality authors, less known, from Iberian languages speaking countries
  • Present innovative views in the artistic field
  • Propose new syntheses, establishing connections, which are relevant and creative, among themes, authors, periods and ideas.

Iberian expression

Revista :Estúdio works within the different Iberian languages: Portuguese, Spanish, Galician and Catalan, encouraging the decentralization and promotion of cultures which could be more intertwined considering the present geographic context.

Originals scope
Revista :Estúdio receives original article submissions according to themes proposed in each issue, by a few conditions and requirements:

  • The authors of the articles must be graduated artists in any artistic field;
  • The author must focus on the work of another artist, rather than on his own.
Preference is given to:
  • Original articles, in which the work, or artist, analysed is from a Portuguese or Spanish speaking country
  • Original articles which reveal less known, but quality artists.

Ethics

Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement

(based on Elsevier recommendations and COPE's Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors)

Revista ESTUDIO is committed to ensuring ethics in publication and quality of articles.

Conformance to standards of ethical behavior is expected of Authors, Editors, Reviewers, and the Publisher.

Authors:

On submitting a manuscript, the author(s) ensure that the manuscript is their own original work.

Authors should not submit articles describing essentially the same research to more than one journal.

Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.

Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.

The corresponding author should ensure that there is a full consensus of all co-authors on the manuscript submission for publication.

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.

Editors:

Editors should evaluate manuscripts for their academic merit without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.

The editor is responsible for the final decision of which of the papers submitted to the journal should be published.

The editor may confer with other editors or reviewers in making this decision.

The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher.

An editor must not use unpublished information in the editor's own research without the express written consent of the author. Editors should take reasonable responsive measures when ethical complaints have been presented concerning a submitted manuscript or published paper.

The authors’ opinion may not always be supported by the editorial board.

Reviewers:

Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the author may also assist the author in improving the paper.

Any manuscripts received for review are treated confidentially.

Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must not be used for personal advantage and be kept confidential.

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used by reviewer without the express written consent of the author.

Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate.

Reviews should be conducted objectively, and observations should be formulated clearly with supporting arguments.

Any referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and excuse himself from the review process.

Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.

Peer reviewers’ identities are protected in the double blind peer review process.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria is focused on
  • Interest, relevance, originality and validity.
  • Linguistic suitability.
  • Correct referencing of contributions and authors and format, according to the rules text.
  • Within the general theme suggested in each issue, "Artists on other artists work", it is appreciated the study of artists from countries of Iberian languages, or if that is not the case, the study of less known, but quality artists.

On even issues of :Estúdio journal (December issues), an additional theme is suggested.

Original Articles

The proposed articles must be original. The authors must not apply for other publications simultaneously, nor to republish them without an authorization of the journal.

The articles must be accompanied of a statement of originality and of non-publication in other spaces.

Two stage peer review

The originals undertake an editorial process that happens in two stages, the "synopsis stage" and the complete "article stage".

During the first stage, the synopsis stage, the submitted abstracts are subject to a preliminary assessment by the director and/or editor, who evaluates its formal and subject accordance. Once these are verified, it is sent to two or more academic peers from the international editorial board, which determine anonymously: a) approved b) not approved.

In the second stage, once the preliminary approval is given, the author of the article must submit, on time, the complete version of the article, according to the style guide (an available "meta-article").

This original version is then sent to two or more academic peers, who integrate the international editorial board, to determine anonymously: a) approved b) approved with some alterations c) not approved.

The selection and revision procedures occur according to the model of double blind review by academic peers, where there is also a geographic protection: the authors are assessed solely by peers which are external to their affiliation.

Before publishing, the authors must have up kept with the originality declaration and hand-over of copyrights, as well as contributing to the costs of the publication.

Sending materials

Sending materials to Revista :Estúdio

The article must be sent by email (estudio@belasartes.ulisboa.pt) in Word file (*.doc or *.docx). It should follow the two stage approval process, first a synopsis stage and then the complete text stage.

First stage:
Submission of synopsis: To submit the synopsis of your article to Revista :Estúdio, send an email to estudio@belasartes.ulisboa.pt, with two different attachments in Word for Windows format, and indicating the issue of the journal you intend to publish your article.

One of the attachments contains the text referring to the anonymous article, with a title. The other attachment contains your personal data and the corresponding title.

Both attachments are named the same (any word of the title) followed by the string "preliminar_a" and "preliminar_b"
For example:

  • The attachment "word_preliminar_a.docx" contains the title and the author’s data;
  • the attachment "word_preliminar_b.docx" contains the title of the article and a synopsis.
The synopsis must not contain any reference to the author, either direct or deductible (it should also be eliminated from the properties of the document). The author must not state references to himself in the submission stage.
These procedures involving two different files have the objective of enabling the blind peer review.

Second stage:
Submission of complete articles, after the synopsis was approved.
After the completion of the first stage, the complete article must be sent on time, in the format of one file, containing the whole article (with title), but with no reference to the author, either direct or deductible (it should also be eliminated from the properties of the document). As in the first stage, the author must not state references to himself on the second submission stage.
The file should be named as it was on the first stage, however the string "completo" must be used instead (e.g.: "word_completo_b").
The figures that are included in the article must also be sent separately, in "jpg" files, named, for example "word_completo_fig_01.jpg", "word_completo_fig_02.jpg", etc. The resolution of these files should be compatible for printing, therefore, it should contain at least 800 pixels on the smallest side (800 being the minimum value: bigger is preferable).
