INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope and policy

  • Comunicação e Sociedade is an open access, online academic journal, that adheres to the stringent standards of peer-reviewing, and which is aimed both at established academics and junior researchers, national and foreign alike. The journal invites articles for publication that promote a deeper understanding of communication phenomena, and that build upon theories and methodologies of the various fields of the humanities and social sciences that converge in the broad field of communication sciences. It is open to contributions from academics and practitioners alike, in Portuguese and in English, and provides authors with an open interaction space. Comunicação e Sociedade invites proposals for original and unpublished academic papers on the topics related to the calls for papers and the objectives and scope of the journal, in the form of (1) articles and (2) book reviews. Interviews are also invited for consideration. Contributions should be drafted taking into account their relevance and accessibility to a communication sciences audience. Articles can be submitted in Portuguese or in English. The journal editors will subsequently order a translation into the other language, at the author expense.
  • This journal is focused mainly for the Communication Sciences field. Nevertheless, as part of its multiple dynamics, other contributions from Social Sciences and Humanities are welcomed, such as Sociology, Psychology, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, History, just to name a few. As to promote research in the complex understanding of social and communicative phenomenon, this journal tends to publish articles in journalism, organizational communication, semiotics, Lusophony and identity, new media and other key areas related to the vast communicative landscape that audiences and societies are integrated in.
  • Comunicação e Sociedade journal follows six steps in order to get its articles published: 1) neutral and objective peer review processes, as the reviewers are not aware of the article's author; 2) each article is evaluated by two reviewers, defined by the editors, whom will be able to present a report on the quality of the research; 3) reviewers are provided with detailed information about the peer-review processes, including the guidelines for evaluation and deadlines; 4) reviewers should present an evaluation of the article according to following criteria: coherence of the proposal to the issue; academic style and grammatical correctness; theoretical background; article's contribution for the Communication Sciences field; 5) reviewers may also present comments on a special section for editors; 6) the final decision towards the article publication relies on the journal's Director in articulation with editors and the Editorial Board, if necessary.
  • Lecturers and researchers in the Social Sciences field, PhD candidates, Master's Degree students, media professionals, business companies and other institutions of the public space.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

  • The journal is published in OJS format, with PDF integration of the complete issue as well as the isolated articles that are part of the volume.

Original Articles

  • Comunicação e Sociedade invites proposals for original and unpublished academic papers on the topics related to the calls for papers and the objectives and scope of the journal, in the form of (1) articles and (2) book reviews. Interviews are also invited for consideration. Contributions should be drafted taking into account their relevance and accessibility to a communication sciences audience. Articles can be submitted in Portuguese or in English. The journal editors will subsequently order a translation into the other language, at the author expense.
  • Although the journal does not force authors to present articles in a classical structure, editors may observe that coherence should be regarded when it comes to publish a research, in terms of an Introduction, Discussion and Method, References, etc. Originals should be edited according to the rules defined by the journal and available in the journal's website.
  • Full papers should not normally exceed 5,000 to 8,000 words, including title, footnotes and references. It should also include an abstract of no more than 200 words and up to 5 keywords, in Portuguese and in English.
  • Figures, tables and artwork should be provided at the end of the manuscript, on separate sheets. Electronic documents should be sent in Word (Windows or Mac OS). Graphics should be inserted in the Word text, in JPEG or TIFF format, with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
  • The first page of the document must contain the following information in Portuguese and in English: 1) Title of the article, 2) Author(s) Name(s) and institutional affiliation; 3) Some biographical data of the author(s) and complete address, including street, city, country and email address, as well as an indication of the corresponding author.

Communications, technical reports, letters, review articles

  • Comunicação e Sociedade invites proposals for original and unpublished academic papers on the topics related to the calls for papers and the objectives and scope of the journal, in the form of (1) articles and (2) book reviews.
